“We did what we always do, which is to bring him in and adopt him and make him our own,” Dr. Jeffrey Hubsher, the animal hospital’s owner, told the Daily Voice. Hubsher said the hospital treated him, bringing him back to good health.
The loving medical attention worked. “This boy bounced back and he became a healthy cat and lovely cat,” Hubsher said.
The cat, who the staff had named Billy, was found in the animal hospital’s parking lot in a very unusual crate in 2013. After taking him in, the staff worked to find Billy a permanent home.
In the meantime, Billy made himself at home in the office, especially in Hubsher’s workspace. “He adopted my chair, my desk,” he said.
While Billy had taken over Hubsher’s desk when he was at the hospital’s sister location in South Salem, N.Y., the staff had taken a liking to the otherwise well-behaved Billy. When Hubsher thought he might have found Billy a new home, the staff wanted Billy to stay. So he did.
After Billy had been in the office for about three years, a new client came into the office. Billy jumped on the reception desk to the surprise of the visitor.
“When she saw Billy, she said, ‘Wait, I know that cat’,” Hubsher said.
Billy was actually Tuffo, a cat who had gone missing from a local family during a move. And the new client was his original owner.
“Those are one of those situations normally where normally speaking he would have gotten adopted," Hubsher said. "He would have been in another household [and] that person would have never found him. But sometimes there’s forces at work that are bigger than ourselves perhaps.”
Hubsher said he likes having his desk back, but he misses the cat who graced his office for so long.
“I’m good with not sharing the desk and chair, but I do miss him, too,” Hubsher said. “I believe that certain things work out for the best, and this is exactly the story here.”
